Budget Hitting Schools

Sorry for the week between posts!  I have been battling a sinus infection pretty much since the last few days of session and I took some time off to move into a new house.  I did promise to keep updating the blog, and I’m going to do so.

Today I did a story about school budget cuts.  Everything that happens with the state has a trickle down effect.  In Clarksville, it’s hitting the school district pretty hard.  Last year, they were a big beneficiary of the school funding formula changes.  So, this year, they were expecting to see some new money as well.  Obviously, the new state money through BEP 2.0 didn’t happen.  Also, the sales tax decline hit them hard as well.  That said, the district is looking to trim $5.3 million from the budget.  School districts all over the state are having to revise their budgets.  Remember, the governor did fund inflationary costs for districts, but the BEP 2.0 was supposed to be implemented over a period of three years.  That was supposed to mean about $87 million in new money for the school district.  That money got cut.  Many districts say while they might not be making any cuts, they certainly aren’t going to be spending a lot of money either.
